Bluestone is a versatile natural stone due to its durability and wearing qualities. It can be a great material for a variety of projects, whether you are planning a walkway, steps, retaining wall, patio or poolscape.
Bluestone is a very dense stone which helps it stand up to the fierce freeze and thaw cycles that we experience here in the Northeast. Bluestone also comes in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes, from traditional square/rectangles to irregular.
There are two different types of bluestone readily available. The first is the most common, which is known as Pennsylvania Bluestone. This type typically doesn’t have a range in color. Most Pennsylvania bluestone is gray and blue.
The second type is New York Bluestone. This bluestone has a wide range in color which can range from blue, tans and deep purples.
Lastly you have the finish. There are two finish options which are natural cleft and thermal. The natural cleft finish is created due to the splitting of the bluestone when it is quarried. This will give a rippled texture on the surface. The thermal finish is sawn cut then a flame is applied to give it a non-slip, consistent surface.
